DDTC provides a Minibus Certificate of Competence on behalf of Devon County Council to their governed schools/organisations. The purpose of the Certificate of Competence is to ensure that staff members driving a Devon County Council minibus, do so in a safe and acceptable manner. We also provide minibus training to schools/organisations that are not governed by Devon County Council but who still wish for their staff to receive training for 'peace of mind'.

WHICH MINIBUS COURSE DO I NEED? The course you need, depends on when you passed your initial driving test:

PASSED TEST BEFORE JANUARY 1ST 1997 - Anyone who passed their test before this date will have automatically been given category D1 on their licence. This allows them to drive a minibus (not for hire/reward purposes) with up to 17 seats including the driver. Although they can legally drive a miníbus, Devon County Council and most other non-governed DCC schools still wish for their staff to receive training before carrying passengers on their behalf as driving a minibus is significantly different from driving a car. You would need to first take our 3-HOUR MINIBUS FAMILIARISATION course (£255.00), with certification lasting 4 years. This certificate needs to be kept in date, so once it is nearing expiry, you would then need to revisit us to then take the 1-HOUR REFRESHER (£110.00). This certification also lasts 4 years. If you were to let your certification lapse and had not taken the 1-hour refresher in time, you would instead need to take the 1.5-hour test (£150.00). **Should there be a concern raised before refresher training is due, perhaps due to an incident, motoring offence or road traffic collision, then we would recommend an earlier re-assessment and possibly some additional training.

PASSED TEST AFTER JANUARY 1ST 1997 - Category D1 will not have been automatically added to your licence, this means in order to drive a minibus (unless your organisation owns a Minibus Lite) you would need to take the full D1 test (medical, theory, hazard perception, on-road test and off-road test). This is unfortunately not something we can help you with but there are other local companies that can.

MINIBUS LITE - If your school or organisation owns a MINIBUS LITE, these can be driven by anyone with a standard manual driving licence (category B), this is due to their lightweight (3.5 tons). No formal training is required to drive a MINIBUS LITE; however, most schools/organisations still send their staff to us for familiarisation training for peace of mind. This 3-hour training course costs £255.00 and is delivered on a 1 to 1 basis.

If conducting the test in your own vehicle, it must be in a clean and road worthy condition. We will inspect your car prior to the test beginning. You must also bring with you proof of insurance and MOT*

You must be able to read a number plate at the distance of 20 metres. Please ensure that you have your glasses with you if you are required to wear them for driving*

You will need an up-to-date knowledge of the highway code*
